Development Association For Needy Elevation (DANE)

DANE (Development Association for Needy Elevation) was founded in 1993 by Mr. A. John Williams, a passionate community development professional committed to uplifting Irular and Dalit communities in rural Tamil Nadu. For over three decades, DANE has worked at the grassroots to protect child rights, promote education, ensure health, and enable sustainable livelihoods.

Our story began in the backward villages of Villupuram and Tiruvannamalai Districts, where generations of families were trapped in cycles of poverty, discrimination, and systemic neglect. Recognizing that true change starts with inclusion and dignity, Mr. John Williams shaped DANE into a people-centric movement — one that places the voices of the community at the heart of every solution. Over the years, DANE has grown into a trusted and transparent social development organization.

We are guided by a strong system of governance and accountability, led by a Monitoring Committee that ensures strategic direction and maintains a clear separation between governance and day-to-day operations. Every initiative we take is backed by transparency, integrity, and measurable impact.

At DANE, we believe in building an India where the most vulnerable are not just supported  they are celebrated. Where a child from an Irular village has the same opportunity as anyone else to dream, grow, and lead. Where communities rise together  educated, healthy, self-reliant, and free. “We don’t uplift individuals alone — we empower entire communities to rise.”

DANE invites you to become an active partner in any one or more of the following ways.

Our Roots

Based in the tribal village of Vellakulam (160 km from Chennai), DANE began as a response to the systemic discrimination and poverty faced by Irulars traditional snake  catchers and Dalits who were denied basic rights and dignity. Through its flagship initiative  ABLE Nursery and Primary  School   DANE has educated over 950 children and empowered hundreds of families.

We serve the Irular and Dalit communities and Narikuravar, Arnththiyar (Cobbler) in rural Tamil Nadu, driven by a passion for community development and social justice.

DANE’s development philosophy is not about charity it is about co-creating solutions with the community, where dignity, opportunity, and human rights are upheld for all.

While our impact has been strong and consistent within Tamil Nadu, our vision is much larger. Due to current resource and funding limitations, we have not yet been able to extend our mission across other parts of India or globally — but we are prepared to do so. With the right support, we can replicate this successful grassroots model and uplift countless other communities living on the margins.
